Gold Cup History
The history behind the Hawkes Bay Gold Cup dates back to 1860, when the first race was worth 100 guineas and run at Greenmeadows, Napier. Hurricane won the Cup which was donated to the then Napier Turf Club by chief enthusiast and mentor, Mr HS Tiffen.
The first “Cup” race the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club ran was the Corinthian Cup. It was for gentleman riders; horses to be owned or trained by a member of the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club. The Cup was run at Hastings from 1877-1882.
The first Hawkes Bay Cup run by the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club was at Hastings in 1888.
The honour role between 1960 & 1980 includes some of the greats of New Zealand racing; Hi Jinx, Key, Glengowan, Fury’s Order, Black Rod, Suleiman & Harp to name just a few.
In more recent times, names such as Surfer’s Paradise, Silver Chalice & Cronus have kept the profile of the Hawkes Bay Cup to the fore.
