The Hawke's Bay Racing logo incorporates New Zealand's modern-day champion racehorse Sunline, once voted the best racemare in the world. The name Sunline epitomises racing excellence, which is representative of the excellence that Hawke's Bay Racing aims to deliver, whilst Sunline bursting out of the sunshine is a symbolic connection to Hawke's Bay's idyllic lifestyle.
Up until Makybe Diva created history in the 2005 Melbourne Cup, Sunline was the highest stakes earner in Australasia with stakes earnings in excess of $NZ14 million dollars. Her 32 wins were achieved from 48 starts in four different countries, including victory in one of the world's most prestigious races: the Hong Kong Mile. Of Sunline's 48 starts all but nine were held in Group I or Group II company and of her 32 wins, 13 came at Group I level. She is one of only a handful of dual winners of Australasia's WFA championship, the Cox Plate and represented New Zealand in 2001 in Dubai at the world's richest raceday, running third in the Dubai Duty Free.
Sunline was unbeaten in her eight starts in New Zealand, with two of her victories coming at Hawke's Bay Racing. Her second victory at Hawke's Bay Racing came in the Group II Mudgway Partsworld Stakes in August 2002. That success turned out to be her final victory, with the champion mare being retired following a brave attempt to win her third Cox Plate in October 2002. This great mare passed away in 2009 but the legend behind our logo will always remain.
