Rio Nugget, preparing for Thursday’s Wanganui meeting, turned in the quickest time in training at this morning’s Hastings track session.
Fast work was confined to the plough, which provided good footing.
Rio Nugget looked to be travelling very well alongside a Towkay-Make Up three-year-old filly at the end of 800 metres in 50.2, the last 600 in a fast 35.3.
Rio Nugget contests the Rating 75 1200 at Wanganui, with Mark Hills to ride. The same combination won the same race 12 months ago.
Neversaynever and a stablemate worked together over 1200 metres in 1:19.7, the last 600 in 37.9. Neversaynever only finished 10th in the Anniversary Handicap (1600m) on the first day of the Wellington Cup meeting but that was her first start for six weeks.
Circles, a Falkirk gelding in James Bridge’s stable, ran a solo 600 metres in 38.5 while a Danroad two-year-old gelding from the same stable ran an easy 600 metres in 42.1. The Danroad youngster is a full-brother to Jolly Jester.
A Howbaddouwantit three-year-old filly in the Bridge stable worked in at three-quarter pace from the 800-metre peg, speeding up slightly over the last 600 in 42.2.
Outback Girl was let off with just pacework. She looks to have trained on well since winning at Trentham 10 days ago and is likely to contest the $45,000 Wairarapa Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) at Tauherenikau next Monday.
Shesalljazz, another last start winner, was another restricted to pacework. She is also heading to next Monday’s Wairarapa meeting, for a $10,000 Rating 65 race over 1000 metres.

Racing: Starguru
Starguru rounded off her preparation for Saturday’s Group 1 Telegraph Handicap at Trentham with an easy workout on her own at this morning’s Hastings track session.
Galloping was confined to the plough, which provided good footing.
Starguru worked over 800 metres in 56.9, coming home the last 600 in 42.4. The Ishiguru mare looks in good order but faces a big task from a very wide barrier draw in Saturday’s 1200-metre event. Rosie Myers has been booked to ride her.
Scareaway worked over a round on the plough and was timed to run from the 1200-metre peg in 1:19.9, coming home the last 600 in 39.4. She disappointed at Awapuni last Saturday and will now be stepped up to 2000 metres at the Hawke’s Bay meeting next Wednesday.
Starguru, an entrant for this Saturday’s Group 1 $200,000 Telegraph Handicap at Trentham, worked well on her own at this morning’s Hastings track session.
There was little in the way of fast work, which was confined to the plough (good).
Starguru was kept under a hold throughout 1000 metres in 1:5.2, coming home the last 600 in 37.9. She is presently 19th on the order of entry into Saturday’s 1200-metre feature, which has a starting limit of 18 runners.
Firekeeper, heading to Trentham on Saturday for the Rating 65 2100-metre race, stretched out well over 1200 metres on his own in 1:17.5. He ran the first 600 in an easy 40.8 but then quickened significantly over the last 600 in 36.7. The big Keeper gelding has not finished further back than fifth in his last seven starts and was second over 2400 metres at Trentham last month.
Last start winner Randy Andy worked in at three-quarter pace from the 800-metre peg in 54, speeding up over the last 600 in 38.9.
Truly Wishful, a likely starter at the Hawke’s Bay meeting on January 25, clocked 50.2 for 800 metres, the first 200 in a quick 12.3 and the final 600 in 37.9.
She’s Gorgeous and Wee Lion, two horses in the Patrick Campbell stable, ran an easy 600 metres in 41.5 while Maninji was only let stride out the last 400 metres when running 600 in 41.5.

Racing: Cowboy
A strong workout by Cowboy over 1000 metres was one of the highlights at this morning’s Hastings track session.
Fast work was confined to the plough, which was in good order and again conducive to fast times.
Cowboy was shading stablemate Cheryl Moana Marie at the end of 1000 metres in 1:3.6, the last 600 in 35.5. Cowboy has been freshened since turning in a disappointing run at Awapuni last month. He is likely to have a jumpout at Hastings next Monday in preparation for a Rating 65 1200 at Hastings on January 25.
Shesalljazz rounded off her preparation for Saturday’s Marton meeting by running another quick 800 metres, the last 600 in 35.7. She has unfortunately drawn wide in the Rating 65 1200.
Zsa Zsa, one of four horses from the Lowry/Cullen stable starting at Sunday’s Hawke’s Bay meeting, ran a solo 1000 metres in 1:6.1, the last 600 in 37.4. She lines up in the maiden 1600.
Flower Of Fashion, also entered for Hastings on Sunday, worked over a round and was timed to run the last 1200 metres in 1:19, the last 600 in 36.7 while The Sting clocked 1:16.5 for 1200 metres, the last 600 in 37.8.

The Coats Choice mare finished third fresh up over 1000 metres at Tauherenikau on January 2 and is likely to start next in a Rating 65 1200 this Saturday’s Marton meeting.

Dee Dee Smash, a likely runner at the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Sunday, ran a solo 1000 metres, the last 800 in 51.8 and final 600 in 37.9. She will be entered for the Rating 65 1400 but needs a firm track to show her best.
